چکیده
DiacrimiDation of apeech IOUDda from three computer-pnerated continua that ranged from volced to voiceleessyllables (/be.paI, Ida·taI, and Ip·bI) was tested with three macaques. The stimuli on .ch continuum varied in voice-onset time (VOT). Pain of stimuli that were equally different in VOT were chosen such that they were either withln-eategory pairs (syllables given the same phonetic label by human Hsteners) or between-eategory pairs (syllables given dif· ferent phonetic labels by human Hsteners). Results demonstrated that discrimination performance was always best for between-eategory pain of stimuli, thus repHcating the "phoneme boundary effect"seenin adultHatenen andin human infantsas youngas 1 month of age. The flndinp are discussed in terms of their specific impact on accounts of voicing perception in human Hsteners andin terms of theirimpactondiscussions of theevolution of language.

Enhanced discriminability at the phonetic boundaries for the place feature in macaques.
Discrimination of speech-sound pairs drawn from a computer-generated continuum in which syllables varied along the place of articulation phonetic feature (/b,d,g/) was tested with macaques. The acoustic feature that was varied along the two-formant 15-step continuum was the starting frequency of the second-formant transition. Discrimination of stimulus pairs separated by two steps was tested al...
متن کاملAn intuitive class discriminability measure for feature selection in a speech recognition system
In this paper we propose an intuitive method for feature selection and dimensionality reduction of a set of selected features. We analyze the feature set by applying an intuitive class discriminability measure. For this purpose, we use the proposed schemes for the “editing” of the training datasets. Editing algorithms basically smooth the decision boundaries and improve the performance of the c...
متن کاملPerception of initial obstruent voicing is influenced by gestural organization
Cross-language differences in phonetic settings for phonological contrasts of stop voicing have posed a challenge for attempts to relate specific phonological features to specific phonetic details. We probe the phonetic-phonological relationship for voicing contrasts more broadly, analyzing in particular their relevance to nonnative speech perception, from two theoretical perspectives: feature ...
متن کاملRepresentation of Phonological Alternations in a First and a Second Language: A Preliminary Report
The first language word recognition system copes easily with the great variability of spoken language. A particular kind of context-dependent variation is phonological assimilation. In French, for example, there is a process of voicing and devoicing assimilation. For example, jupe [yp] ‘skirt’ can be pronounced [yb] when followed by an obstruent of opposite voicing, like /g/ in grise [iz] ‘...

In this paper, we discuss an automatic event-based recognition system (EBS) that is based on phonetic feature theory and acoustic phonetics. First, acoustic events related to the manner phonetic features are extracted from the speech signal. Second, based on the manner acoustic events, information related to the place phonetic features and voicing are extracted. Most recently, we focused on pla...
